VI.15.8 Pompeii. Casa del Principe di Napoli or House of the Prince of Naples.

In Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, prior to January 1897, this house may be described as being in Insula 12 of Reg. VI. Afterwards it was changed to Insula 15 of Reg. VI.

In Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, January 1897, plan on p.14, this house was numbered as VI.15.9.

It was renumbered in NdS, May 1897, p.198 as VI.15.8.  See Note on Region VI, Insula 15 plan for information.

According to NdS –
the walls of the fauces, or entrance corridor, were decorated on a white background, which was then partitioned with black and red lines.
The high dado, or ‘zoccolo’ was painted black.

VI.15.8 Pompeii. December 2007. Impluvium in atrium. According to NdS, in the centre of the tuscan atrium was a square impluvium of 1.55m. It was covered with opus signinum, and at the head of it was a marble table. The floor of the atrium was littered with small cubes of white mosaic laid in parallel lines.

On the north wall, when excavated, this existed to the height of 5.70m. At the top on a white background, it was partitioned into blocks by red and black lines. On the lower area, it had a red background divided by green lines into panels outlined in yellow. In the panels were painted swans, peacocks, other birds and griffins. At the lowest level, the dado was black. See Notizie degli Scavi, January 1897, p.34.
